Fells Point Chess Club

I went to another G/30 tournament at Fells Point Chess Club yesterday, and did not get 0 points again! I played 4 games, and I feel I played ok. I got 1.5 points, but did play 2 masters, so I guess I should be happy. Here are the games:

NN 2204 - Askine 1609
Askine 1609 - NN 1718
NN 1460 - Askine 1609
NN 2206 - Askine 1609

I do feel like I am already playing better than I was earlier in the week. Maybe that is good, or maybe I am crazy. Either way, until next time.

"Here I had the opportunity to win the e5 pawn, but I made the cardinal sin of chess. I didn't really see anything wrong with it, but I assumed that my opponent did."

Most strong players would probably let you have that pawn withought thinking in this position. You are not better, afterwards.

Perhaps, but I still think it would have made the game more interesting if I had taken it. Perhaps I am still worse, but I have a pawn to show for it.

Since I've been AWOL for a while and have in-laws in town this week, I thought I'd try to be useful here since I can't be over the board... My comments are so far restricted to the second game with Kyle as White.

I'm far from an expert on the Panov attack, having always played the Advance or the Nc3xe4 variations.

7 Qb3? is really never a consideration unless b7 is undefended; there are lines in the Slav and QGA where this is very effective because of the double attack on d5 and b7. With the Bc8 undeveloped, it doesn't really do much; that piece solidly defends e6 and b7.

That said, you might even be able to sac the pawn with 8 Bxc4 Nxd4 9 Nxd4 Qxd4 and 10 Be3 or 0-0 planning Nb5.

12 Bc2 (planning Qb3/Bg5 or some such nonsense) might make sense.

I really don't understand why an endgame here is better for white - the two bishops aren't really active, and pushing the central pawns is going to give black a 2v1 majority on the queenside.

Hi Graham. I don't really think the ending is much better for me at all either. That is why I was more than happy to trade down into the Bishops of Opposite Colors ending. I think if I had played f4 though when the comp thinks I should have I may have been a little better, but not really enough to win. I think draw was the correct outcome.

Oh yeah, and I meant 12 Bc2 planning Qd3/Bg5, not Qb3. I guess maybe f4 gives you something - I was looking at Nxd7, since BB vs. NN might be fun.
